CBT sessions

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a structured, practical approach that helps people recognise and change unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours. It’s based on the idea that the way you think affects how you feel and how you act, so by understanding and shifting those patterns, you can create real, lasting change. CBT breaks challenges down into clear, manageable steps, making it easier to tackle what feels overwhelming.

In therapy, we’ll work together to identify specific problems you want to address. I will help you notice negative or automatic thoughts that show up in certain situations, thoughts that may be distorted, overly harsh, or simply untrue. From there, you’ll learn to challenge those thoughts and replace them with more balanced, realistic ones.

Sessions often include practical tools such as journaling, thought tracking, or small between-session tasks designed to help you apply what you’re learning in everyday life. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapy designed to help your brain process and heal from painful or distressing experiences. It works on the principle that upsetting memories can get “stuck,” continuing to trigger strong emotions, physical reactions, or unhelpful beliefs long after the event has passed. EMDR helps these memories become less intense, allowing you to feel calmer and more in control.

During a session, you’ll focus on a difficult memory while following gentle eye movements, taps, or sounds in a rhythmic pattern. This process helps your brain reprocess the memory, reducing its emotional charge and helping you develop healthier perspectives. I will guide you through the steps at a pace that feels safe and manageable.

EMDR can be effective for a range of challenges, including trauma, anxiety, OCD, phobias, grief, and other emotional difficulties. It’s typically done in longer sessions, often around 90 minutes, to allow enough time for safe, thorough processing. Sessions are structured, collaborative, and tailored to your needs, with tools to help you cope between sessions.

TF-CBT sessions

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is a structured, evidence-based approach designed to help people process and heal from traumatic experiences. It builds on traditional CBT but incorporates trauma-sensitive techniques to ensure a safe and supportive environment for addressing painful memories and emotions.

In TF-CBT, therapy focuses on both understanding and managing the impact of trauma. You’ll work with me to identify unhelpful thoughts and beliefs related to the trauma and learn strategies to challenge and reframe them. The approach also teaches coping skills to manage stress, anxiety, and emotional triggers, helping you feel more in control in everyday life.

Sessions involve gradually approaching difficult memories at a pace that feels safe, while simultaneously developing practical tools for emotional regulation. This can include relaxation exercises, grounding techniques, and ways to strengthen resilience. Sessions are usually recommended to last around 90 minutes to allow enough time to reprocess information when memories need updating, ensuring that the brain has space to integrate new, healthier perspectives.

The cognitive model for PTSD underpins TF-CBT, explaining that trauma-related distress often comes from how we interpret and make sense of the traumatic event. By identifying unhelpful thought patterns and learning new ways to process the trauma, TF-CBT helps reduce symptoms such as intrusive memories, nightmares, flashbacks, avoidance, and heightened anxiety.
